ABOUT MASSEY CENTRE

Since 1901, the Massey Centre for Women has provided home, hope and refuge to hundreds of pregnant and parenting teenagers and their infants.  Through provision of specialized services including residential care, supportive housing, life skills training, secondary school education, primary health care, child care, recreational activities and emotional support, Massey Centre staff works with these young women and their infants to create positive futures.  In addition, Massey Centre has an onsite Early Learning (day care) Centre and, since 2003, is the lead agency in the Toronto-Danforth riding for the Ontario Early Years Centre (OEYC) program.

As society’s attitudes toward unmarried mothers and their children have changed, so have the services – and the manner in which they are delivered – provided by the Massey Centre.  To facilitate the changes in service, Massey Centre incorporated as a non-profit charitable organization in November 1989 and became an accredited Ontario Children’s Mental Health Centre in 2002.  We were re-accredited for a further four-year period in December 2009.

In 1996, Massey Centre received funding from the Ministry of Housing (now Ministry of Community and Social Services) for the Transitional Supportive Housing component of its post-natal program.

In 2009, the Board of Directors adopted an updated Mission Statement for the agency, as well as developed a Vision statement and strategic directions for the Centre.

Mission

The Massey Centre is an inclusive organization which strives to achieve healthy outcomes for all families as they work toward their goals.

We nurture empowerment, independence, and growth for pregnant and parenting teens and their children by providing transitional housing as well as education, community programs, services and supports for all families.

Vision

We envision an inclusive community where parents, children and babies achieve their full potential.

The young women we serve come to us from backgrounds of abuse, neglect, and poverty.  They are also for a wide diversity of racial, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

We are proud to serve some of our community’s most vulnerable citizens – pregnant teenagers and their infants – who are often isolated, discriminated against, homeless, and facing many hurdles on the road to becoming full contributing members of the community and confident, competent parents.

Bowling for Babies proudly supports the programs and services of the Massey Centre for Women.
